Welcome to Kodurand Violin School

Kodurand Violin School offers exceptional violin teaching for students of all ages and levels, from four years old to adult at the KVS studio in Brockley, Backwell (Somerset).

Liv-Marie and Simon Kodurand are award-winning professional violinists who were scholars at some of the most prestigious conservatoires in the UK, The Royal Academy and Royal College of Music.

They have formed careers as soloists, chamber musicians and directors of various musical ensembles across the U.K.  As teachers Liv and Simon have established a highly successful private teaching practice with numerous          prize-winning students, and KVS students have won music scholarships to local schools and music colleges, and won places with the National Children's Orchestra. In addition to their private practice they teach at schools such as Wellington School, Taunton School, Kings Hall School and Badminton School, and music departments at the Royal Academy of Music, Bristol University, Bath Spa University and Goldsmith’s University.

Learning the violin should be fun, enjoyable and inspirational no matter what your age or ability, and the KVS approach is based on these principles. Liv and Simon love teaching students of all ages, from the very youngest to adults (our oldest was 91!), beginners to advanced players.  We tailor our lessons to suit your needs, whether that is to simply have fun playing lighter repertoire or work towards a career in music.

Students have the opportunity to perform in our summer and winter student concerts, to enjoy the wonderful experience of performing to others, alongside our newly launch violin ensemble which is a fantastic way of enjoying chamber music and meeting other students.

Our primary goal is to provide fun, inspiring, well-structured lessons and provide you with a solid technique so that you can perform the pieces you love to the best of your ability.

Best decision I ever made for my daughter's music training. Kodurand Violin studio is a real professional and Liv is a... real teacher, and I can tell you she is the main reason my child's love for the violin and the excitement for each class. Liv is so successful; it’s been a year already built a great friendship with her in fact my daughter is only 5 and a half years old, but she says she wants to be a violin teacher when she grows up.read more

I am a mature adult beginner (60 years). I started learning the violin with Liv in April this year. It has been... revelation! Liv is extremely patient, very encouraging and strives to help you to achieve your best. She has both a great sense of humour as well as an empathy for the trials and tribulations that challenge a beginner. She does not let you give up! I am learning on-line via Zoom. Liv provides video recordings of each lesson as well as regular consultation through Whats App, phone and email. I have sent Liv recordings of my practice sessions and she always provides a constructive and informative critique. Her love of the violin and the beautifully expressive way she communicates through her instrument is inspiring. I had tried to learn the violin on and off throughout the years but gave up disheartened. I decided to try one last time. I am so glad I found Liv and only wish I had done so many years earlier. Liv- thank you. I hope I have many more years of lessons to come😃.read more

My daughter is a beginner and has been taking lessons for 6 months. Simon is an excellent teacher, passionate and... patient with a great sense of humour, which are definitely required to take a young beginner through the wonderful journey of learning violin!! The Kodurand Violin Studio has a very inclusive approach. Even in Month 2, my daughter was able to take part in a concert playing a short piece, which she was very proud of. In the current challenging time, the Studio has adapted swiftly to offer online lessons. It is amazing that she can continue to learn new pieces and new technical skills as music is definitely needed to get through this time! Thank you very much and I highly recommend the Studio to anyone who wants to start learning violin (and I'm considering it myself too!)read more

Beginning to learn to play the violin as an absolute beginner at the age of 47 was a daunting step for me to take, when... I approached Liv for lessons. Fortunately she didn't think this was at all a ridiculous idea and under her firm but gentle instruction I've been pleased with my progress. She is a perfectionist with a high level of technical skill, not allowing me to get away with anything incorrectly right from the start, which has been very good for me. She is also patient, warm and approachable, so that lessons have been thoroughly enjoyable and inspiring.read more
