Violin Lessons

Kodurand Violin Studio teaches students of all ages and levels (from age 4+), beginners to advanced, at the KVS studio in Brockley, Backwell.

Liv and Simon have more than 20 years teaching experience at the highest levels, and provide a dedicated, friendly and encouraging approach.  Many of our students are prize-winners at local music competitions, and though ABRSM music exams an extra rather than fundamental part of KVS tuition, a high percentage of our students have been awarded distinctions.  KVS students have won music scholarships to some of the top schools in the area, and won places to the National Children's Orchestra and prestigious music colleges in London (including Guildhall School of Music and the Royal Academy of Music).

However, we are equally happy to teach those who would simply like to learn the violin for fun without working towards exams, whether you have a goal to play in an orchestra, a chamber group or simply for yourself.

No previous knowledge of classical music or the violin is necessary for beginners.

What to expect

Our lessons contain three essential elements; a well-structured plan, an inspiring approach and a supportive environment.  We will teach you how to practise and develop a sound technique so you can progress by yourself, but most importantly of all we aim to give you a sense of accomplishment and joy in your achievements!

We encourage parents to attend lessons with their child so they can support their child’s learning at home.

We suggest all students book an initial trial lesson so we can assess your level, discuss goals and make sure you have a comfortable setup to ensure the best possible start.

Online lessons

We offer online violin lessons to students of all ages and levels via Zoom, Skype and a range of other platforms.  If you would like to learn a new skill in the comfort of your own home or if you would simply like to top up lessons in the holidays then this may be for you!

Uniquely we are now offering weekly video support feedback for those who would like a little extra help between lessons, playalong duets, and our digital teaching library has a wide range of online learning videos to help you along.

Best decision I ever made for my daughter's music training. Kodurand Violin studio is a real professional and Liv is a... real teacher, and I can tell you she is the main reason my child's love for the violin and the excitement for each class. Liv is so successful; it’s been a year already built a great friendship with her in fact my daughter is only 5 and a half years old, but she says she wants to be a violin teacher when she grows up.read more

I am a mature adult beginner (60 years). I started learning the violin with Liv in April this year. It has been... revelation! Liv is extremely patient, very encouraging and strives to help you to achieve your best. She has both a great sense of humour as well as an empathy for the trials and tribulations that challenge a beginner. She does not let you give up! I am learning on-line via Zoom. Liv provides video recordings of each lesson as well as regular consultation through Whats App, phone and email. I have sent Liv recordings of my practice sessions and she always provides a constructive and informative critique. Her love of the violin and the beautifully expressive way she communicates through her instrument is inspiring. I had tried to learn the violin on and off throughout the years but gave up disheartened. I decided to try one last time. I am so glad I found Liv and only wish I had done so many years earlier. Liv- thank you. I hope I have many more years of lessons to come😃.read more

My daughter is a beginner and has been taking lessons for 6 months. Simon is an excellent teacher, passionate and... patient with a great sense of humour, which are definitely required to take a young beginner through the wonderful journey of learning violin!! The Kodurand Violin Studio has a very inclusive approach. Even in Month 2, my daughter was able to take part in a concert playing a short piece, which she was very proud of. In the current challenging time, the Studio has adapted swiftly to offer online lessons. It is amazing that she can continue to learn new pieces and new technical skills as music is definitely needed to get through this time! Thank you very much and I highly recommend the Studio to anyone who wants to start learning violin (and I'm considering it myself too!)read more

Beginning to learn to play the violin as an absolute beginner at the age of 47 was a daunting step for me to take, when... I approached Liv for lessons. Fortunately she didn't think this was at all a ridiculous idea and under her firm but gentle instruction I've been pleased with my progress. She is a perfectionist with a high level of technical skill, not allowing me to get away with anything incorrectly right from the start, which has been very good for me. She is also patient, warm and approachable, so that lessons have been thoroughly enjoyable and inspiring.read more
